Your mention of hack-a-thons being a way to “identify the people who have a different view to a work life balance” reminds me of the few times I’ve been contacted by in-house recruiters wherein, among the list of things they’d used to sell me on joining the company, was “free dinners”. Each time, almost immediately, I would tell them some variant of “you are talking to the wrong type of person” and politely end the conversation.
